The meeting started at 6:30 p.m. The meeting was called to order with a salute to the flag. Roll Call: Chairman Rubino Present Mr. Levy Present Mr. Michalski Present Ms. Trifiletti Present Ms. Pochily Present Ms. Dickinson Present Attorney DeCotis Present Code Officer Cerone Present Coordinator Hart Present Trustee Murphy Absent Minutes from the January 24, 2019 meeting were reviewed by the present members of the board. APPLICANT: 38 WOLF ROAD HOBBY LOBBY (Wall Sign) Mr. Tom Wheeler from AJ Signs was present before the Board to present a wall sign for the new Hobby Lobby store opening where the old Toys R Us was. Mr. Wheeler stated that Hobby Lobby is looking to replace the letters on the building with 54” high block letters with a total square footage of 224 sq. ft. Mr. Wheeler stated that the building is just over 300 feet back from the curb line of Wolf Road. Hobby Lobby is looking to keep the signage in kind to what is existing on the building with internal lit channel letters. 1 Sign Review Board March 28, 2019 Ms. Trifiletti asked what the size of the letters existing on the building are. Mr. Wheeler stated that he was unsure of the exact size. Chairman Rubino asked what the size of the proposed letters are. Mr. Wheeler stated that they are 4.5 feet high. Mr. Wheeler added that the letters are similar in size to what Toys R Us and Babies R Us currently have on the building. Attorney DeCotis stated that the building is over 300 feet off of Wolf Road and the curb cuts are confusing with the bank and drive-thru. Attorney DeCotis stated that in his opinion the larger sign would be an added safety feature for drivers looking for the store. Ms. Trifiletti stated that people can drive right by the building and could miss it, she asked if there will be a monument sign as well. Mr. Wheeler stated that there was a sign permit issued by the building department to reface the monument sign and directional signs. Mr. Cerone stated that the applicant is just re-facing the existing monument sign and directional signs which is within the Village Code and therefore did not require a variance. Mr. Michalski stated that CarMax and Appliance Giant, on Central Ave were 300 feet back from the road and had both monument and wall signs. Attorney DeCotis asked if this proposed sign is the same size as the Hobby Lobby store in Latham. Mr. Wheeler stated that his company did not put up that sign so he is unsure, but he did state that the proposed sign is a corporate standard. Mr. Michalski stated that he is okay with approving the sign but with smaller letters at 4 feet high. Mr. Michalski stated that there should be no loss with the letters being 6 inches smaller. Mr. Wheeler stated that with this sign the individual letters cannot be shrunk, the overall width of the sign would be brought down and would look awkward on such a large building. Mr. Cerone stated that he has no problem with the sign seeing as it is comparable to the existing Toys R Us sign. Mr. Wheeler stated that there are two signs currently on the building, one for Toys R Us and the other for Babies R Us. Mr. Cerone passed around a google map image of the existing condition of the building with both signs. Chairman Rubino stated that it’s the size of the letters that seem too high and he would like to see the letters closer to 4 feet. Chairman Rubino asked Mr. Wheeler if he can go back and measure the letters on the building and report back for the next meeting. Mr. Wheeler stated that he can do that. Mr. Rubino polled the Board on their thoughts on the application. Ms. Trifiletti and Ms. Pochily both stated that they did not feel the monument and wall sign was necessary for this business. Mr. Levy stated that he was ok with the way the application was presented. Mr. Michalski stated that he would like to see the size of the existing letters and agree with 4 foot channel letters. Chairman Rubino stated that the application will be tabled until the applicant can provide a rendering and more information on the exiting wall signs. DISCUSSION: The Board discussed topics to review before the code revision meeting next week. Mr. Michalski made a motion to adjourn the meeting. Mr. Levy seconded the motion. 2 Sign Review Board March 28, 2019 VOTE: Unanimous to adjourn the meeting at 7:00 p.m. Respectfully Submitted, Alexandra M.
