A committee convened by the Lawrence Livermore Lab, famous as one of the historic technological ‘hot’ spots in the US for prosecuting the Cold War, just came out with a 77-page report. The committee of nuclear weapons and diplomacy experts used mock-continuous analyses of streams of publicly available (unclassified) information to present a convincing case that the US will shortly be facing not one but two nuclear superpowers capable of destroying it separately or together with atomic weapons.
The report laid out the available range of options to deal with this horrifying situation. They are bleak and very limited. The ones most likely to be adopted would entail relitigating the old Cold War (MAD) at a much more perilous level, because at this same time we are facing the triple threat of accelerating industrial human population-driven global warming and the resultant destruction of the biosphere.
Just the combined depletion of trillions of dollars globally from such a new arms race will kill us all.
There is an opening to completely denuclearize the entire planet inside this looming catastrophe. It would require the formation of the new UN structure described in UN II: Creating a UN with Teeth. But that is not all it would require, just the final step. Before that, intense diplomacy among all the nations of the world, using the current UN structure to maximize and compel participation, is needed.
Basically, all nations would need to first come to agreement on the facts, the most fundamental of which is chaons are real. And they have a real impact on the parameters of the problem, and the real solution, which is the only viable set of actions that will work to permanently remove this problem.
Free chaons drive both nuclear fission and fusion in Nature. We have simply created distortions of those natural processes in atomic (fission) and thermonuclear (fusion) bombs. On Earth, uranium ores are ‘hot’ to varying degrees, but not dense or pure enough to reach critical mass, the point where uncontrolled runaway fission can produce an explosion. Same with gravity-powered fusion: Uncontrolled supernovas only happen at the end of certain large stars’ billions-of-years’ lives, due to the effects of increasing, and accelerating, chaonic gravity, especially during the final run-ups to their ends.
Thermonuclear bombs use atomic bombs to pressure-fuse hydrogen ions, creating artificial novas.
But free chaons do much more than this. They also age atomic weapons, far faster than they do conventional ones. Ancient bombs from WWII and even WWI have occasionally been found that are
still explosive, but most unexploded ordnance left over from wars decays to nonexplosive states within decades. Atomic weapons, however, decay far faster, because the free chaons in them also release many additional particles (by atomic decay, or radioactivity) which then degrade the rest of the bombs.
This means atomic weapons must all be replaced constantly, making the cost of upkeep astronomical.
At the same time, the true costs of running nuclear reactors are multiples of other power sources’.
The solution to this problem is simple: Ban the mining and processing (concentration) of uranium, and for sure ban its conversion to plutonium or any other more dangerous radioactive element. This also means dismantling all nuclear reactors worldwide, and banning the construction of any new ones.
Such a regime can be created within the confines of UN II: A new UN charter which prevents any one nation (or more) from blocking unanimous action by the rest of the world. All nuclear weapons would be dismantled and destroyed simultaneously, and a global surveillance network installed to detect any
radioactive or other signatures indicating cheating. Every nation would have a stake in ensuring total compliance in perpetuity. We need to do this immediately to head off a ‘fourth horseman’ disaster.
