Anti-War Protest, September 24, 2005
With two companions, Kathy and Alice, I went to Washington for the historic anti-war march on Saturday, September 24, 2005. Oraganizers of the protest believe over 300,000 people decended on Washington, DC to express our opposition to the Iraq war and our solidarity with the victims of hurricane Katrina.
We boarded a bus from Albany, NY at 11:45 pm Friday, and arrived in Washington at 7:20 am. There were so many people! People from everywhere, from Alaska, Texas, Florida, Arizona to name just a few states. We filled the streets with our message to stop the war! Stop the War on the Poor in Iraq and New Orleans! Give peace a chance!
We listened to excellent speakers from 11:30 am to around 3:00, when we joined the march. Speaker after speaker called for justice, called to end this illegal war on Iraq, spoke about many issues, and called for the impeachment of George W. Bush for high crimes. Some of the dozens of speakers we heard were Jesse Jackson, Cindy Sheehan, Damu Smith (Black Voices for Peace), George Galloway (Britsh MP opposed to the war) Jessica Lange (actress) and Ralph Nadar. Every speaker brought up a different reason for stopping the war.
By the time we joined the march, marchers stretched from the beginning of the march all the way to the end. People filled the street. These are the photos I took, but they do not convey the massive massive number of people in attendance.
We arrived back in Albany on Sunday, 1:20 am. Email your comments to Lynne Jackson.
