Turkey vultures in pitch pine trees

Think that a Pitch Pine tree that dies in a controlled fire is a sad thing? Think again. Dead trees provide important destinations for our raptor and vulture friends. Turkey vultures use the trees as gathering places to warm themselves many mornings. Raptors such as hawks and falcons have been spotted frequently using these trees as perching spots. Dead trees provide a great way for Pine Bush visitors to identify birds. The pitch pine trees in this picture are on Blueberry Hill and show as many as 5 turkey vultures on one tree!
