More on the West Nile Virus

To follow up on Ward Stone’s talk at the September Save the Pine Bush Dinner, according to the Albany Times-Union, the disease has spread to 12 states and the District of Columbia, from New York and New England and as far south as North Carolina. In addition to the many birds that have been infected, horses, bats, cats, raccoons, rabbits and a skunk, as well as people, have been infected. This year 18 humans were hospitalized compared to 62 last year. Of the 18, one person died and one remains in a coma. But serious illness occurs in less than one percent of people infected so there probably were many more cases, most of them unnoticed.
